Matthias Ziegler

VP, acquisitions and sales, Epsilon Film

  • Read German and Scandinavian literature at Ludwig-Maximilians-University, then attended the University of Television and Film (HFF) in Munich
  • Joined Global Screen as a sales co-ordinator in 2021

Ziegler has gained rounded industry experience over the years: he produced two independent films while at HFF film school in Munich, then had a spell in distribution at Universum Film before starting at sales agency Global Screen.

Since late 2023, Ziegler has helped former Global Screen colleagues Julia Weber and Alice von Einem to build new sales outfit Epsilon Film from scratch. “We have brought eight features to three sales markets after only a year and a half,” he says. “It’s something we are very proud of.”

The children- and family-

focused sales company is backed by German group Beta, which Ziegler describes as a “great partner — they are agile, flexible and perhaps most importantly reliable”. Epsilon’s line-up includes animations The Amazing Maurice — The Waters Of Life and Nessie Junior as well as live-action projects Lassie And The Wild Bear and School Of Magical Animals 4.

Ziegler says honesty and transparency are the key to building successful long-term relationships in the film industry. He cites Weber and von Einem as important mentors in his career, describing them as dynamic, inspiring and flexible. “They are always looking for ways to improve things,” he observes. “They never stick to something just because it’s easy and comfortable.”

Looking ahead, a focus is helping Epsilon to build out from its family entertainment roots. “We would love to explore further audiences with other commercial and high-concept projects,” says Ziegler. “There is a great opportunity for escapism in these unpredictable times.”
